Travel Advisory: Northbound Interstate 17 closed in North Phoenix for bridge installation overnight Friday (June 1)  ADOT advises drivers to plan for 18-mile detour; southbound closure scheduled for June 8   PHOENIX – Drivers who use Interstate 17 in North Phoenix should plan for the northbound lanes to be closed overnight this Friday (June 1) as crews set the spans for a new pedestrian bridge just north of Jomax Road. During the closure, drivers will use an 18-mile detour to bypass the work zone.   Northbound Interstate 17 is scheduled to be closed between Happy Valley Road and Loop 303 from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday (June 2). Drivers will exit at Happy Valley Road, travel west to Lake Pleasant Parkway, north to Loop 303 and east on Loop 303 to re-connect with I-17. Because services are limited, ADOT advises drivers to be well rested and have enough fuel in their vehicles. Read our blog to learn more!   Next week, crews will set the bridge spans over southbound I-17 and the interstate will be closed between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road. The southbound closure is scheduled to occur from 11:30 p.m. Friday June 8 to 4 a.m. Saturday June 9. Southbound drivers will exit Loop 303 westbound to Lake Pleasant Parkway, travel southbound to Happy Valley Road and east on Happy Valley Road to re-connect with I-17.   View a flier and map or visit the ADOT web site for more information. Strong winds and blowing dust possible on Arizona highways Wednesday

For Immediate Release: May 22, 2012 Contact: ADOT Public Information Office news@azdot.gov -or- 1.800.949.8057     Traffic Alert: Strong winds could affect driving in Arizona tomorrow Reduced visibility, possible dust storms could slow traffic on Interstates 10 and 40   PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers that strong winds on Wednesday (May 23) could impact travel in the northeast and southwest regions of the state.   National Weather Service offices in Tucson and Flagstaff have issued separate wind advisories from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Strong sustained southwest winds from 20 to 35 mph, including gusts up to 55 mph are predicted, according to the National Weather Service.   ADOT urges motorists to use extra caution due to possible difficult driving conditions as strong winds over desert areas can result in sudden periods of limited or zero visibility due to blowing dust.   Areas to pay particular attention to include Interstate 10 between Casa Grande and Tucson, and Benson and the New Mexico state line, as well as Interstate 40 near Winslow.   Motorists play in important role in safety when operating their vehicles during a dust storm. ADOT crews to remove old temporary eastbound Interstate 10 exit at State Route 90 early next week   Work will require right lane closures on eastbound I-10 approaching Exit 302                      Motorists traveling east on Interstate 10 near Benson will encounter lane closures on Monday (May 21) and Tuesday (May 22) while the Arizona Department of Transportation removes pavement from a temporary detour onto State Route 90 that is no longer in use.   The right lane of eastbound I-10 will be closed both days from 6 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. for one mile beginning a mile and a half west of the junction with SR 90.   Motorists are asked to obey posted speed limits in the construction area and be prepared for the possibility of brief delays.   Another temporary detour is now in use for the eastbound exit onto State Route 90 (Exit 302). Drivers exiting at that interchange will also encounter lane restriction on SR 90 immediately south of the interstate, where ADOT has begun work to widen that segment of highway. Eastbound traffic will be shifted to one westbound lane on SR 90 during the estimated three months needed to reconstruct the new eastbound lanes.   The work is part of ADOT's on-going $27.6 million project to replace the I-10 overpass bridges at SR 90, realign a curving section of I-10 west of the interchange and make the improvements to SR 90.   ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. UPDATE: State Route 90 widening near Interstate 10 rescheduled to begin Monday   First phase will require all SR 90 traffic to share current eastbound lanes                            As construction continues on the Interstate 10/State Route 90 improvement project, crews will begin working on widening State Route 90 to seven lanes near the interchange with Interstate 10 in Benson Monday (May 14).   The Arizona Department of Transportation will close the westbound lanes of SR 90 immediately north of the traffic signal at Village Loop Drive at 7 a.m. Monday for a three-month period when traffic in both directions will be routed to use the current eastbound lanes to travel through the project area.   During this time, ADOT crews will reconstruct the westbound lanes and construct a raised median between I-10 and Village Loop Drive. New storm drains and street lighting will also be included in the project.   While the westbound lanes are being reconstructed, access to businesses east of the highway at St. Andrews Road will be closed. Access to those businesses will be available from Village Loop Drive. Also during this phase of the widening project, the Caverns Drive exit from businesses west of the highway will be restricted to right turns only. Although SR 90 is designated as an east-west route, the highway runs north and south in the Benson area.   The work is part of ADOT's $27.6 million project that includes construction of new I-10 overpasses at SR 90, and realignment of a section of curving interstate west of the exit.   When the first phase of the SR 90 widening is complete, traffic in both directions will be switched to use the newly constructed westbound lanes and crews will begin work on the eastbound lanes.   ADOT will continue to provide information on this project, which is scheduled for completion in 2013.   Drivers are advised to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
