Drivers urged to pay attention in work zones
For Immediate Release April 20, 2012 Contact: ADOT Public Information Office news@azdot.gov – or – 1-800-949-8057 ADOT marks National Work Zone Awareness Week Transportation agency urges drivers to avoid distractions, use extra caution when encountering highway work areas PHOENIX – Most people killed in highway work zones are drivers or their passengers, not workers who have to stay prepared for hazardous situations when building or maintaining Arizona's roadways. The Arizona Department of Transportation is asking drivers to understand the life and death challenges associated with work zones. The message is being delivered during the annual National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 23-27), which is observed at the traditional start of the highway construction season across the country. "We don't want to lose any of our ADOT family members who put their lives on the line to improve your highways," said ADOT Director John Halikowski. "At the same time, national figures show more than 80 percent of people killed in work zones are drivers or their passengers. The prevention of such tragic crashes depends on drivers slowing down and paying attention in these areas." Federal figures show a total of 576 people were killed in highway work zones around the country in 2010, including 14 people here in Arizona. Arizona's climate lends itself to highway improvement projects all year along, although high country work zones tend to increase as warmer weather arrives. "Don't Barrel Through Work Zones," is the safety-based theme of this year's work zone awareness campaign. "It starts with the driver paying attention to the work zone ahead," said ADOT State Engineer Jennifer Toth. "The signs, cones and reduced speed limits are all there to protect you, as well as our workers." Tailgating is another driving behavior that increases the odds of highway crashes, especially when work zones require merging. Arizona Department of Public Safety officers are keeping an eye out for aggressive drivers who follow other vehicles too closely. Drivers also are reminded that state law provides for increased fines for traffic violations within work zones that include signs advising drivers that fines are doubled. # # # |

Two oversized loads passing through Benson Sunday morning will bring delays on eastbound Interstate 10 and State Route 90
Two oversized loads passing through Benson Sunday morning will bring delays on eastbound Interstate 10 and State Route 90
Thirty-minute closures at Exit 302 scheduled for 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
April 18, 2012Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed at the State Route 90 interchange in Benson for two brief periods on Sunday morning (April 22) to allow two trailers carrying oversized loads to travel west on the eastbound lanes in order to avoid the underpass at SR 90 which can't accommodate the size of their loads. The first oversized load, a 180-foot semi-tractor weighing nearly 600,000 pounds, will enter the eastbound lanes of I-10 using the exit ramp at the State Route 80 exit (Exit 303) at 7 a.m. Sunday. The truck, carrying an industrial turbine to a California energy plant, will exit I-10 using the SR 90 entrance ramp (Exit 302) within 30 minutes of the interstate closure.State Route 90 also will be closed in both directions at the I-10 overpass during this time.Once the first truck has cleared the area, traffic will be allowed to move through the area for one hour before the second closure goes into effect at approximately 8:30 a.m.The second closure also is expected to last approximately 30 minutes and will include the closure of eastbound I-10 and SR 90 at the I-10 overpass. That truck, also carrying a turbine to California, is 165 feet long and also weighs just under 600,000 pounds. The closures are necessary since the trucks are too large to exit westbound I-10 and get through the underpass onto SR 90 and too heavy for a bridge on State Route 82 that would otherwise provide an alternate route.Westbound I-10 traffic will not be affected.Motorists are advised to avoid the area during these scheduled closures if possible and expect half-hour delays at approximately 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.Additional closures may be necessary and ADOT will provide information about any future closures before they occur. For more information about this project please visit www.azdot.gov/statewide or contact C.T. When westbound Interstate 10 reopens at 6 a.m. Sunday (April 22), the left lane will remain closed and a 45 mph speed limit will be in effect until 6 a.m. Monday (April 23) when both westbound lanes will be open. The work is part of ADOT's $27.6 million project to replace the I-10 overpass at SR 90, straighten a curving section of I-10 west of the interchange and make improvements to State Route 90 near I-10.ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Demolition of old overpass on eastbound Interstate 10 at State Route 90 scheduled for next week
Demolition of old overpass on eastbound Interstate 10 at State Route 90 scheduled for next week
Weekend work on new I-10 bridge deck postponed because of forecast for wind and rain
April 12, 2012Work to remove the old overpass on eastbound Interstate 10 at State Route 90 near Benson will require more travel restrictions throughout next week.Motorists should be aware of the following lane and ramp closures scheduled between Monday (April 16) and Friday (April 20):
- The eastbound I-10 exit ramp at SR 90 (Exit 302) will be closed from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. Monday (April 16) to allow crews to set barrier wall along the existing ramp. During this closure, eastbound I-10 traffic wishing to travel on SR 90 can continue to Ocotillo Road (Exit 304) and get back onto westbound I-10 to access SR 90.
- On three consecutive evenings â€" Tuesday (April 17), Wednesday (April 18) and Thursday (April 19) â€" the Arizona Department of Transportation will close the right lane of eastbound I-10 for one mile beginning a half-mile west of SR 90 from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning. These closures will allow crews to demolish the old overpass bridge on eastbound I-10, which has been replaced with a newly constructed bridge.
- During each of those overnight I-10 lane closures, State Route 90 also will be closed in both directions under I-10 for the safety of motorists. Drivers on SR 90 will be able to enter eastbound I-10 where they will can return to westbound I-10 or access northbound SR 90 by using the westbound I-10 entrance ramp at Ocotillo Road (Exit 304).
The forecast for high winds and rain has postponed ADOT's weekend plans to detour I-10 traffic at State Route 90 and close SR 90 to allow crews to pour concrete for the new eastbound bridge being constructed. This work was previously announced this past Monday and is now expected to be pushed back one week. ADOT will provide more detailed information about the new schedule next week.ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur.
