Repaving of State Route 80 west of Tombstone begins Monday

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin work next week to repave an eight-mile segment of State Route 80 west of Tombstone. The project will improve the roadways by providing motorists with a smoother driving surface and extend the life of the highway.

What to expect on SR 80:

Work on SR 80, scheduled to start on Monday, Aug. 20, will begin approximately four miles west of the junction with State Route 82 and continue east to the western edge of the city of Tombstone. Work will take place from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays.

The project area, which includes the Customs and Border Protection checkpoint, encompasses eight miles of SR 80. Lane restrictions will require traffic in both directions to stop and allow construction crews to direct alternating traffic through the single open lane during work hours.

Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected and motorists are advised to plan ahead. This work is scheduled to be completed in late August 2012.

Final striping and marking will be done in late September 2012.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
